Acoustic solution for the sports canteen at the sports hall in Lembeke, Kaprijke

In a sports canteen, everything revolves around socialising, conviviality, and relaxation. However, hard surfaces, high ceilings, and many visitors often cause disruptive echoes. Conversations require more effort, and the overall sound experience is negatively affected. For the sports canteen at the Lembeke sports hall in Kaprijke, EASY Noise Control implemented an effective acoustic solution. With strategically placed ceiling panels, we improved the acoustics without compromising the appearance of the space.

    The challenge

The sports canteen features a ceiling with exposed wooden beams. This gives the space a warm and characterful appearance, but it also presents acoustic challenges. Sound reflects off hard surfaces, causing voices to pile up and resulting in a noisy environment.

The client was seeking a solution that:

    • Significantly reduces the glare
    • Increases speech comfort
    • Blends with the existing interior
    • Keeps the wooden ceiling construction visible
    • Provides a durable and easy-to-maintain finish

    Our Solution

For this project, we chose 56 EASYceiling Plus ceiling panels.

    Installation specifications

    • Product: EASYceiling Plus
    • Number of panels: 56 pieces
    • Size per panel: 180 x 60 cm
    • Colour: Black
    • Cavity height: 10 cm
    • Installation: Between the existing wooden beams

By placing the panels between the wooden beams, the authentic character of the ceiling was preserved. At the same time, we created a large absorbent surface that effectively absorbs sound.

    Why choose EASYceiling Plus?

EASYceiling Plus absorbs disruptive sound waves before they continue to be reflected throughout the room. This immediately results in more calm and better intelligibility.

For sports canteens, clubhouses and hospitality venues, this offers important advantages:

    • Less echo
    • Improved speech clarity
    • More comfort for visitors
    • Less listening effort
    • A professional appearance

The black finish also provides a nice contrast with the wooden construction and matches the colour of the original ceiling. As a result, the ceiling has a modern and well-maintained appearance.

    The result

After installing the 56 ceiling panels, the sports canteen experiences a noticeably quieter sound environment. Conversations are already more pleasant, and visitors need to raise their voices less. This creates a more enjoyable atmosphere for athletes, volunteers, visitors, and staff. The full effect will, of course, become apparent when the sports season is in full swing again at the beginning of September.

Additionally, the acoustic solution perfectly complements the architecture of the room. The wooden beams remain visible and retain their characterful appearance, while the black panels provide a stylish finish.

    Improving acoustics in sports canteens

A sports canteen deals daily with large groups of people, enthusiastic conversations, and fluctuating visitor numbers. Without sufficient sound absorption, noise quickly accumulates. This leads to a noisy space where communication becomes increasingly difficult.

With a targeted acoustic approach, you not only improve comfort, but also the overall user experience. Visitors stay seated longer comfortably, conversations proceed more smoothly, and the space feels more professional.

    FAQ

Why Use the Ceiling to Improve Acoustics?

The sleeping time in a space is reduced by installing sound-absorbing solutions on reflective, (building) materials. Often, the ceiling is considered first, which is not unusual: the ceiling is a large, reflective surface spread across the entire room. Unlike a wall, the ceiling is usually still an unused surface. Elements already attached to the ceiling, such as lighting and fire detectors, can be integrated with the solution. This generally leads to choosing an acoustic solution on the ceiling.

What is the difference between acoustic panels and an acoustic spray ceiling?

An acoustic spray ceiling forms a single layer across the entire ceiling and provides a rough, white finish. It dampens sound, but works especially well when the entire surface is treated. Acoustic panels are individual elements that you install at specific locations. They often absorb sound more effectively, require less material, and allow you to choose the design yourself. Panels also offer more freedom in style and are suitable for both homes and commercial spaces. A spray ceiling is primarily a technical solution, whereas panels offer both acoustic and aesthetic benefits.

Which works better: wall panels or ceiling panels?

Both wall panels and ceiling panels improve acoustics, but the combination works best.
Why does the combination work better?

    • Sound waves spread in all directions.

    • Both walls and ceilings, along with furniture made of hard materials, cause reflections.

    • By addressing both surfaces, you capture more unwanted sound waves.

    • This causes reverb to decrease more quickly and remain more stable.

When do you mainly choose wall panels?

    • In narrow or long spaces.

    • When there are troublesome reflections from the side walls.

When do you mainly choose ceiling panels?

    • In spaces with high ceilings.

    • In open spaces such as offices where sound waves spread horizontally and vertically.

How are acoustic ceiling panels installed?

Ceiling panels are usually hung with adjustable cable sets from the structural ceiling. The installation is simple, without the need to cover the entire ceiling. This also keeps the existing decor or lighting easily accessible.

    What are acoustic ceiling islands?

Acoustic ceiling islands are freely hanging panels mounted below the ceiling. They absorb sound from multiple sides and are therefore highly effective in improving the acoustics in larger or open spaces.

How many ceiling panels do I need?

It depends on the size of the space, the height, the usage, and the level of reverberation. A general guideline is to cover 30% to 50% of the ceiling surface with acoustic material to significantly reduce the reverberation. We always recommend getting in touch so that we can assess your specific situation and provide tailored advice based on that.
