What is acoustic material?

Acoustic insulation, sound-absorbing material, acoustic damping material, or sound insulation acoustics. There are many terms that are used to denote acoustic material. But what is really meant by it?

The term ‘acoustic material’ is used for materials that have been specially designed to improve acoustics.

Sounds logical. However, there is a distinction to be made between acoustic material, insulation and anti-drumming.

Specifically, by acoustic material, we mean a plate or mat of absorbent foam. This can also be fibre or wool. It is suitable for absorbing sound. Sound absorption is the capture of sound energy.

Acoustic material is therefore in fact not a sound-insulating material. Isolating sound means blocking the energy. This is not necessarily done with acoustic materials. You must do this with sound barrier mats.

Acoustic materials are in principle not used for ceilings or walls. That is what panels are for.

It does not have the right fire properties for this and is often not aesthetically fitting. It is mainly a technical material. It is mainly used in industry and machine construction.

They are therefore neither sound-insulating materials nor acoustic panels. To make things more confusing, acoustic materials are sometimes referred to as such.

Moreover, acoustic materials can contribute to optimal sound insulation in a room. You can do this by using them as cavity fillers, for example. Or by preventing an internal baffle.

Where is acoustic material used?

Acoustic material is used for many applications. Especially to reduce resonance and hollow sound. It is very suitable for casings and installations. Examples are the casings of a pump, air-conditioning unit or machine.

Applications:

Absorbent material is supplied to various sectors in the Netherlands. Including:

– Machine and equipment construction (casings, housings, ducts)
– Vehicle construction (including yacht building and auto industry)
– Interior construction (panel filling or cavity filling)
– Construction and dismantling (cavity filling / casings / server room)
– Private individuals: car, boat, camper, home appliances

What types of acoustic materials are there?

We offer a wide range of acoustic materials that have been specially developed for acoustic applications.

Polyurethane foams are perhaps the best-known foams. You can find different variants on our webshop.

The well-known convoluted foam, flat foam, and pyramid foam. In addition, variants with a top layer against water splashes and oil. These foams are flame-retardant.

For fire-resistant acoustic panels, we offer EASYpol polyester wool and Fireseal. The latter is also self-adhesive polyurethane foam unique in its kind. These materials are also used in room acoustics projects.

Polyester wool is sustainable and fire-resistant wool made of polyester fibres. A good alternative to the well-known glass and rock wool. We also offer melamine foam. A fireproof lightweight foam with adhesive.

Customisation

Acoustic materials are used on a project basis. Consider, for example, making conveyor belts in production lines quieter. Or in aggregates, machines, and installations for metalworking.

Every project and every application needs a customised solution. We have our own cutting and punching machine for special dimensions.

We are happy to help you with specific noise problems. If you have special requirements regarding the material, we will think along with you.
