Sound insulation and acoustic floors

For the insulation of your house you can also take a look at the sound insulation floor page. Here you can find more tips for the sound insulation of your floor. Also for your wall and ceiling.

In sound insulation it is important to detect sound leaks.

Common sound leaks are cracks in the floor, cracks under and around the door. Ventilation grilles, heating pipes, sockets.

What is a floating screed?

An acoustic floating floor is a screed that is decoupled from the construction floor (under the floor). This ensures that the floating screed no longer makes contact with the subfloor. This prevents vibrations through the construction floor and surrounding walls.

Particularly in older houses, floors are often not built in accordance with modern sound insulation requirements. This means that any contact with the floor (if it is not floating) can be heard in the rest of the house. And sometimes even at the neighbours’ house.

The best way to make a floating floor is to lay vibration insulation and mass under the screed. The mass is not essential for absorbing structure-borne sound. However, it does contribute to reducing airborne noise. The combination therefore ensures a reduction in noise from neighbours.

The vibration insulation absorbs the energy that the screed transmits when someone walks on it or makes contact with it.

Make your own acoustic floating floor?

EASY Noise Control offers vibration insulation under the name EASYbond. This is a high-density spring plate. EASYbond is made from recycled polyurethane foams. This gives the product a “variegated” colour which can differ per production. We therefore also call it rebonded foam, or speckled foam. With EASYbond you create a sound-absorbing underlay. Opt for the 10 mm version.

You put the EASYbond cold on the load-bearing subfloor. The screed is then placed on top of this. The screed can be parquet or laminate and becomes floating in this way.

If you want to lay a softer screed on top, it is best to first place a rigid underlay (for example MDF) on the EASYbond.

If you also want to insulate airborne noise on an upper floor or attic floor, you can place extra mass on or under the EASYbond. This is possible with the EASYmass product.

In short, with a layer of EASYbond and EASYmass under your wooden floor, you have an excellent homemade acoustically insulating floor.

In addition, it is very important to keep the floating floor clear of the walls. The screed must not make direct contact with the wall. You can achieve this with strips of EASYbond along the edge.

You can make a mass-spring system yourself by doing the following:

  1. You place vibration insulation strips on the walls to make the floor contact-free
  2. You lay a combination of EASYmass and EASYbond seamlessly on your subfloor. The most chosen order is first EASYmass and then EASYbond.
  3. Place a wooden finishing floor on top.

Need insulation material for your floor?

Are you planning to make a floor with spring brackets or in some other way? In addition to the solutions mentioned, we also offer other user-friendly materials for cavity filling. EASYpol polyester wool or EverUse, for example, are suitable for this.

We offer floating screeds to construction companies (on quotation) and to private individuals for do-it-yourself jobs.
