What is acoustic material?
Acoustic insulation, sound absorbing material, acoustic damping material, or sound insulation acoustics. There are many terms used to describe acoustic material. But what do we really mean by them?
The term ‘acoustic material’ is used for materials that have been specially developed to improve acoustics. Sounds logical. However, a distinction can be made in terms of acoustic material, insulation and anti-drumming.
In concrete terms, by acoustic material we mean a plate or mat of absorbent foam. This can also be a fibre or wool. Suitable for attenuating sound. Sound attenuation is the absorption of sound energy.
An acoustic material is therefore in fact not a sound-insulating material. Insulating sound means blocking the energy. This is not so much done with acoustic materials. You have to do this with ground plates.
Acoustics and insulation are in fact two separate concepts. Acoustics is damping, insulation is stopping. The concept of acoustic insulation is therefore somewhat confusing. Although the term ‘acoustic insulation’ is intended to indicate that it is about insulating sound.
Unlike acoustic panels or solutions, acoustic materials are not used for sound-insulating ceilings or walls.
It does not have the right fire properties for this purpose. Aesthetically, it is often not appropriate. It is mainly a technical material. It is used more in industry and mechanical engineering.
They are therefore neither sound-insulating materials nor acoustic panels. To make it confusing, they are sometimes referred to in this way.
Moreover, acoustic materials can contribute to optimal sound insulation of the room. You can do this, for example, by using them as cavity fillings. Or by preventing an internal sound box.
Where is sound-insulating material used?
Acoustic materials are used for many applications. In particular to reduce baffling and hollow sound. It is very suitable for use in enclosures and installations. For example, a casing for a pump, air conditioning unit or machine.
Areas of application:
Soundproofing material is supplied to various segments in the Netherlands. Among them:
– Machine and equipment construction (casings, enclosures, ducts)
– Vehicle construction (including yacht building and car industry)
– Interior construction (panel filling or cavity filling)
– Construction and dismantling (cavity filling / enclosures / server room)
– Private: car, boat, motorhome, appliances at home
What type of acoustic materials are there?
We offer a wide range of sound absorbing materials specially developed for acoustic applications.
Polyurethane foams are perhaps the best-known foams. You can find different variants in our webshop.
The well-known convoluted foam, flat foam, pyramid foam. In addition, variants with a top layer against splashing water and oil. These foams are flame retardant.
We offer EASYpol polyester wool and Fireseal for fireproof acoustic panels. The latter is also self-adhesive polyurethane foam, which is unique in its kind. These materials are also used in room acoustics projects.
Polyester wool is a durable and fire resistant wool of polyester fibres. A good alternative to the well-known glass and stone wool. We also offer melamine foam. A fire-safe lightweight foam with self-adhesive layer.
Acoustic materials are used on a project basis. Think about making conveyor belts in production lines quieter. Or in aggregates, machines, installations for metalworking.
Every project and every application needs a customised solution. We have our own cutting and punching machine for special dimensions.
We are happy to help you when it comes to specific noise problems. If you have special requirements regarding the material, we think about a solution together with you.
